ABOUT THIS RELEASE:
In April 2006, a humble Yamaha CS-5 monophonic synthesizer once owned by Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) was sold at a VEMIA hardware auction. Famously, this specific unit features the actual tracklist liner notes for his landmark 1994 album Selected Ambient Works Volume II hand-etched directly into the plastic on the bottom. The winning bidder—a close friend of Toronto-based electronic veteran Solvent (Jason Amm)—placed the synth on a generous, long-term loan in Solvent’s studio.
RDJCS5 is the direct result of that loan. Painstakingly programmed and multi-tracked over the course of several months, every single sound heard on this record was generated entirely by that lone, historic Yamaha CS-5.
Rather than a dry exercise in technical synth-nerdery, the limited and primitive palette of the CS-5 challenged Solvent to deliver a full-bodied, confident tribute to classic IDM and electro. While the track names are taken directly from the unofficial titles of Selected Ambient Works Volume II, the music bypasses beatless ambient textures to explore the playful, melodic, and terse Detroit-via-Düsseldorf electro grooves of Aphex Twin's mid-90s eras (such as ...I Care Because You Do and the Analord series).
